Lois Ruth Bates

Lois Ruth Bates died peacefully on February 12, 2024 at 99 years of age. She was married to Paul Bates from 1942 until his death in 1982. They had six children: Paul Robert ll who died as an infant in 1944, Sharon Johnson of Denver, Colorado, Karen (Rodger) Steeper of Durango, Colorado, Steve (Nancy) Bates of Bryan, Ohio, Keith (Alice) Bates of Bluffton, Ohio, and John (Cindy) Bates of Sycamore, Ohio.                                         

Her long-time partner, Kenneth Ames, preceded her in death in 2023. Lois and Ken lived in McCutchenville, Ohio for many years, where Lois enjoyed gardening, baking, and hosting family get-togethers. Lois was a resident of Wyandot County Skilled Nursing Center in Upper Sandusky, Ohio for the last five years of her life. 

She will be remembered by her 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren as a great storyteller who enjoyed nothing more than entertaining them with stories about her childhood. Her 22nd great grandchild is expected in May. 

A long-time resident of Sycamore, Ohio, Lois was active in Little Theater, Music Club, church choir, and the Red Hats group where she held the honor of being the oldest member. She loved music and played the piano, organ, and ukulele. She also was an artist and enjoyed painting.                                                          

She was born on August 5, 1924 in Union Township/Van Wert County, Ohio. The oldest child of Earl and Augusta Borden, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Our Master’s Chapel, 306 Washington Street, Benton, Ohio, 44882.
