Margaret Fillmore Obituary

Margaret A. Fillmore, age 95 of Fairhaven Community, Upper Sandusky, Ohio died at 8:57 P.M., Thursday, September 17, 2020 at Fairhaven Community. She was born on April 24, 1925 in Delaware, Ohio to Donald J. and Anna (Mothersill) Hornberger. She married Bill Fillmore on April 28, 1951 at the William Street Methodist Church in Delaware, Ohio and he passed in 1996.                                                                  

Surviving are the following children, Don (Linda) Fillmore, Sycamore, Ohio, Janet Fillmore, Lyndhurst Ohio, and Julie (Bill) Mariski, Portland, Maine. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Tytus (Jenna) Fillmore, Reily, Ohio ,Torry (Taylor) Fillmore, Upper Sandusky, Ohio, Taylor (Mitchel) Grenwalt, Nevada, Ohio and Sarah Mariski, Portland, Maine, plus five great-grandchildren, Piper, Owen and Iris Fillmore, Reily, Ohio, Mateo Fillmore, Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and Atticus Grenwalt, Nevada, Ohio. A sixth great-grandchild will join the family in November. One brother preceded her in death, Howard Hornberger, in 2005 besides her husband and parents.                                                                                                                           

In 1943, Margaret graduated from Willis High School where she was known for her infectious giggle, competitive spirit on the basketball court, and her skill in editing the yearbook. She went down the street to Ohio Wesleyan where in 1947 she graduated with a degree in early childhood development from the Home Economics department. She played field hockey and was the executive secretary of the WSGA (Women Student Government Association), senior editor of the yearbook, and a member of many service organizations. She was a proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority (Rho Deuteron Chapter) and recently received her 75th year membership pin.                                                                     

After college, Margaret’s first teaching job was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where she was part of the Child Health Research Project with the children of the doctors and nurses. She also would be a preschool teacher at a private school in Perrysburg, Ohio and after her marriage, a kindergarten and first grade teacher at the Lisbon Public Schools.                                                                                              

A private graveside service for the family members will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery, Delaware, Ohio.               

During her years as a resident at Fairhaven, Margaret enjoyed the church services with the traditional hymns and organ music, as well as the visits from Pastor Becky. Margaret’s family would like to thank the staff of Fairhaven Community and Heartland Hospice-Marion for their kind, compassionate care they gave to their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. “It isn’t easy being a caregiver at this time… we want you to know that you are our heroes and forever in our hearts.”
